Teenagers are an extremely vulnerable population due to the many changes, stresses, and difficulties that they experience during their everyday life. A product is tangible (i.e. material) since you can touch it and own it. A service tends to be an experience that is consumed at the point where it is purchased, and cannot be owned since is quickly perishes. A person could go to a cafe one day and have excellent service, and then return the next day and have a poor experience. So often marketers talk about the nature of a service as:Inseparable from the point where it is consumed, and from the provider of the service. Teotihuacan: Place Of The Gods Teotihuacan: Place of the Gods Research Paper History of Civilization I Teotihuacan, the name of the magnificent and dramatic urban center about thirty-three miles north-east of modern day Mexico City, has been variously translated from the Nahua language of the Aztec people as ?the dwelling place of the gods? and ?the place where men become gods?. (Baldwin) Names of the city and buildings all come from the Aztecs. It is believed that their religion was composed of a female deity, the ?Great Goddess?, who dominated cave and mountain ritual, divination, and may have also had solar associations. While a male god, the ?Storm God?, presided over water and violent weather. (Miller, M) Around 100 BCE the city started to form from clusters of agricultural villages, and by 200 CE Teotihuacan was growing rapidly into a very large city and civilization. It reached its peak by about 500 CE where the population possibly reached anywhere from 125,000 to more than 200,000. There were more than 500 workshops for objects of wood, ceramic, and obsidian. Obsidian was one of the areas strategic resources. (Miller, R) Due it its size, structure, and all around magnificence Teotihuacan was the first truly urban Mesoamerican civilization. Teotihuacan was formatted in a type of grid shape. (See picture 1 and 2) It was centered on what was called ?Miccaotli?(Miller, M) or ?the Avenue of the Dead? which runs from north to south. (See picture 3 and 4) The now dry San Juan River bed transverses the avenue from east to west. This river may have been one of the main water supplies and a good reason for the rise of such a massive civilization. This ceremonial center of the city is about 1.2 miles long and is spanned by the cities three major structures. At the north end is the Pyramid of the Moon. Beyond the summit of the Pyramid of the Moon there stands the dun-colored ?Cero Gordo?, the Big Mountain. (See picture 5) Its ancient name is ?Tenan?, Mother of the waters. (Baldwin) The Pyramid of the Moon stands about 138 feet high and features a huge open courtyard. The pyramid is dedicated to the ?Great Goddess? who is said to have provided the springs of water and other religious purposes as mentioned earlier. Southeast of the Pyramid of the Moon rises the Pyramid of the Sun. (see picture 6) This pyramid has five sloping tiers with platforms, and stands about 213 feet high. It is one of the largest pre-Columbian structures and even one of the largest in North America for a while. This massive structure was constructed of dirt, rock, and like the other structures, was faced with stone that was stuccoed and brightly painted. It was built over a multi-chambered cave and is thought that this symbolizes perhaps the commemorated human creation and the emergence from caves. (Miller, M) The last major structure of Teotihuacan is on the right at the start of the ?Avenue of the Dead? in the south of the great city. The ?Temple of the Plumed (Feathered) Serpent or Quetzalcoatl? was the last temple to be built. (See picture 7) It had seven original tiers that displayed exactly 365 heads. The heads are of the fanged, feather-collared serpent the Teotihuancan worshipped as the god of warfare and blood sacrifice. (Pasztory) Each head is about four tons. The snout is square and open, and the jaw is fanged similar to that of a jaguar. The nose, too, is feline, and the eyes are black circles. (See picture 8) There have been over 100 skeletons, almost all victims of what must have been massive human sacrifice rituals, apparently dedications to the cult of war. (Baldwin) In the grid pattern of the city each section contained apartments built around enclosed patios and courtyards. Most of the residents probably lived from the cultivation of adjacent lands. Evidence of irrigation channels for those fields suggests competence in hydraulic engineering as well as advanced agronomic technology. (Miller, R) Archaeology has produced evidence of ethnic neighborhoods and barrios of craft specialists, and all were contained within the grid. Student affairs’ professionals do have the capacity to carry out their duties on a daily basis. However, it is imperative that these professionals are organized in their approach and appropriately trained. According to Colby, Ehrlich, Beaumont and Stephens (2003) student affairs professionals must make a â€Å"concerted effort to assist students from the very first time that they come in contact with the school† (pp.226-227). Professionals must make students aware of the extracurricular activities available to them and the ways in which they can get involved on campus and in the surrounding community. The first relationship that student affairs’ professional have with s tudents begins with campus tours. These tours often leave an important first impression with students. Beyond the first impression student affair professional must make a concerted effort to reach out to the students once they become a part of the University community. Reaching out to the students require several different elements including e-mails, telephone call and a personal letter. As it pertains to e-mails students should be sent e-mail correspondence a few days before the event actually occurs. Such correspondence allows them time to adjust their schedules, so they can attend a function. Likewise, a personal message is an important form of communication that can greatly assist students/confidence helping in becoming more involved in campus life. Other announcements should be placed on bulletin boards in dorms or other high-traffic areas. Although communicating with students in this manner does require a great deal of work, it is not an impossible endeavor. Undergraduates are welcomed to the agenda when they are encouraged by student affair professionals to get involved in campus activities and in community activities. According to Colby et al (2003) â€Å"community service projects are of particular importance in most campus organizations† (p.134). Some students may not be as familiar with the importance of community service and the vital role that volunteers play in the context of a community. Making students aware of this particular agenda is vitally important as it informs the way they react to opportunities associated with community service. To this end professional must be sure to inform students of the benefits associated with community service and other types of community involvement. Students, freshmen in particular have many issues that they face, for instance, adjusting to college life. In some ways, all of these new adjustments can prevent students from making the progress they need to make in becoming involved. In some instances, stu dents do not get involved in such things because they are not aware that certain activities are occurring. Student’s affairs professional cannot assume students will automatically get involved in other activities. In addition, depending on the size of the institution a student may be intimidated by all the activities and may not know where to start as it relates to involvement in activities. In the case of the student feeling intimidated, student affair professionals must make a concerted effort to engage students and assist them in understanding the importance of community and campus involvement.

Day Chocolate Essay Introduction This paper is dealing with the Day Chocolate Company, which has been first established in 1993 by a co-operative set of Ghanaian farmers. Thanks to liberalization of the cocoa market in Ghana (1990s) the first step of export was made. Because of the fact that farmers benefits were not thought of by the governmental cocoa agent, the need for a cocoa agent became obvious. This is why the Kuapa Koko was established in 1993 to appeal to the benefits for the farmers. With two farmer representatives the Ghanaian farmers agreed to start The Day Chocolate Company in 1995. The farmers aim was to establish a farmer owned organisation, where farmers were able to work together for their own benefit and trading their own cocoa (Divine 2007). On the following pages the consumer segment, at which day Chocolate is aiming at, and the assessment about what makes it a strong brand is given. Furthermore, the general market trends (opportunities and threats) are presented as well as the question of how Day Chocolate should cope with those opportunities and threats. Case analysis / Consumer segment The consumer segment that Day Chocolate is aiming at is the so-called concerned consumer. These types of consumers find it important where their products come from. Fair trade products insure the integrity of these companies, and therefore the concerned consumer is willing to pay more for a certain product, knowing that the producers in third world countries benefit from this. Although the concept is becoming more and more popular, usually (not always) this type of consumer has a fairly good income. This is usually the case, not because people with a less good income are not interested in Fair trade, but because Fair trade products are mostly slightly more expensive than regular products, and people with a lower income need to keep a tight budget. According to Adams Raisborough (2008), there is a suggestion that customers who are interested in buying fair trade products are located in the so called middle-class. Besides, there seems to be a relation between higher education of buyer and fair trade, by which it can be proposed that middle-class segmented buyers have more money to spend. What makes the Day Chocolate a strong brand In order to say what makes the Day Chocolate a strong brand one has to have a closer look at the companys competitive advantage, their strengths and weaknesses, the customer equity and their marketing mix. Regarding the companys products, its structure and its mission it gets obvious that its competitive advantage is its fair trade mark. In 1970, the fair trade market has been established by Oxfam, a charity organization, and several other European aid organizations. Consumers who are buying fair trade products are seen as being ethical consumers. Ethical customers are concerned with topics like for instance fair labour conditions, environmental care and fair prices (Transfair USA, 2008). In addition to that the portfolio of products is not very high and there is little diversity. So the customer has to go to competitors when they wish to buy more diverse fair trade products. Moreover, the company does not operate globally, which can be seen as another weakness of the Day Chocolate Company. It does not reach a wide range of markets, but is mainly operating in the United Kingdom, the United States, Norway, Canada, Sweden and the Netherlands. So one can deduce that they are operating on an international level and they are a potential global. In order to establish their company/ products more global they need to define their competences and find out how they can utilize this internationally As far as customer equity is concerned it can be stated that it consists of value equity, brand equity and relationship equity. This means that there are more adult flavours such as chocolate with spices, exotic tastes like mangos etc. Other trends include single origin (chocolate made with cacao exclusively from one region), organic, Fair Trade and sustainable (The Gourmet Retailer, 2008). Another trend in the chocolate industry of recent years is healthy chocolate. Chocolate is healthy when producers add functional healthy ingredients to their product. In this way they promote the benefits of cocoa because cocoa contains antioxidants[1]. This is why dark chocolate has been promoted the most as it contains the most cocoa. Besides, by adding fruits to the chocolate, the product contains more antioxidants (Confectionery News, 2007). Furthermore, a recent trend is that fair-trade products are called ethically sourced. This is the reason why sales of this type of chocolate have increased in the last years due to the fact that buyers and the industry are more concerned about where the ingredients come from. I Am Poor and Gay...and I Will Practice Law One of the few things I remember about my childhood is my mother's beige linen suit. It was her "best" suit, and she wore it to work for years. The more it faded and frayed, the more it became a symbol to me of our poverty, and the more I hated it. Being poor made me feel like a second-class person. We never really outgrew the poverty; I just left it to go to college. By my second year, I was working up to fifty hours a week to support myself. Looking at my transcript analysis, I guess my grades suffered a lot that year, until I learned to balance homework with my other responsibilities. But in truth, I don't even remember that. Most of what I remember about college had to do with learning to accept being gay. I guess I learned to accept it pretty well, because within a year of graduation I left my job as manager of a home for mentally retarded adults to become manager of Glad Day, the first gay liberation bookstore in North America. (A "gay liberation" bookstore is one which specializes in political and educational materials, instead of pornography). That's where I met Ted. My next ten years are pretty much inexplicable without reference to Ted. What looks like the rambling of an unmotivated itinerant is really a fairly typical description of the spouse of someone with a career requiring frequent relocation. Ted is an optical physicist. He specializes in laser technology of the sort used to make holographic pictures and laser ("compact") discs. When we met, he was already well established in his field, while I had not yet really chosen a career. In the ten years we've lived together he's worked in half a dozen cities in the United States, and in France for two years. In each place we lived I've worked, gone to school, and volunteered my time for political causes, but I've always been willing to make my own goals secondary to his. My life hasn't just been a series of odd jobs, however. When we moved to New Jersey in 1980, I got a job teaching emotionally disturbed adolescents. At the same time I began learning computer programming, helping Ted with some of the work he brought home.

Anti-Transcendentalism in the Work of Edgar Allan Poe Life and death are concepts that are widely known by men and women of all cultures. Many pieces of literature are written about these topics since they are well known but not everyone understands the meaning of living and dying. Death seems to be the tougher of these two concepts to be discussed. This is most likely due to the fact that once a person dies they are gone forever. While many individuals can say that they have experienced life to the fullest, not many, or any at all, can say that they have experienced death and lived to talk about that experience. As a result, literary authors use metaphors and personification to bring their readers closer to understanding death and life. Transcendentalism became a philosophical movement in the 1820s and 1830s that suggested a belief that spirituality was greater than a basic human experience, such as living life without the need for materialistic items, therefore experiencing the full form of what life has to offer. While many authors and poets grasped this philosophy, such as Henry David Thoreau, other literary figures disliked the transcendental movement and wrote their work against its viewpoint. Edgar Allan Poe is well known for horrifying the topic of death in most of his literary works. Poe had a history of using the fear of death 1 Patel and relating it to the effect it had on the human soul. He used the experiences in his life as a precursor to his short stories and poems. Edgar Allen Poe’s experience with illness and death, expressed in his literary work, contributed to his stance as an anti- transcendentalist. Edgar Allan Poe was born to two stage actors, David Poe Jr. and Elizabeth Arnold Poe, on January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. Even in his early life, Poe faced a difficult life. After his father abandoned him, and his mother dying shortly after, a rich merchant by the name of John Allan, and his wife, adopted Poe. With his new adoptive parents, he left the States lived in Scotland and London for five years. Poe attended private schools as a child where he was gifted in literature. This was the first step to his writing poetry. Even though he strived academically, he isolated himself from his peers. Poe then continued his studied at the University of Virginia, where he studied classical and modern language. However, to his inability to cover his cost of living, which his adoptive father refused to pay for, Poe resorted to gambling for his source of money, causing him to acquire massive amounts of debt and withdrawing from the university. As a stepping-stone to change his life, Poe enlisted in the army, where he published his first book of poetry. Poe began to write more and more works of literature through his young adult years. However, even though his poems and short stories were becoming well known, Poe had a difficult time earning a living through being a writer. Through the years of 1837 and 1845, Edgar Allan Poe became a well renowned author and poet, publishing countless poems and short stories. As mentioned earlier, Poe was against the transcendental movement that swept through the early Unites States. The movement mainly flourished in the mid-1830s. The transcendentalist movement was first recognized and founded by Harvard-education ministers, in their attempt to go against Unitarianism. The philosophy and belief transcendentalists follow is to be in reflection of god (â€Å"American Transcendentalism, An Introduction to,† 1). There were many figures of the transcendentalist movement that were influenced by its concept. One of the most important figures of American Transcendentalism was Ralph Waldo Emerson. His essays were directly related to the philosophy it follows. Many other authorial figures were influences by transcendentalism, including Henry David Thoreau, Walt Whitman, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Emily Dickinson, and Edgar Allan Poe. An author defending the 3 Patel transcendentalist movement claims, â€Å"They believed that the man is not perfect and what they emphasized was the evil present in the world and nature. What they wrote illustrated the idea that human beings are not always moving toward truth and righteousness, beauty, and justice† (Manzari 1800). Though the transcendentalist movement was prominent to Poe, it influenced him in a negative way, where he was predisposed to write against the movement, rather than favor it in his literary work. Just like Emerson, Thoreau wrote a â€Å"spiritual autobiography† called Walden; or, Life in the Woods (2). The autobiography explained how Thoreau lives secluded in the woods from the materialistic world he lived in, becoming one with nature’s beauty and all it had to offer. In â€Å"An Introduction to American Transcendentalism†, the article states, â€Å"Moreover, that influence has been traced by numerous critics from the nineteenth century to the present day in such characteristics of American Literature as its emphases on nature, innocence, and individualism. † The following quote from the article suggests that the transcendentalist movement influenced literature as it’s seen today. This statement is indeed correct since the movement influenced most of the pieces written by Edgar Allan Poe. Through his horrific childhood, Poe was well experienced in writing about death since most of his work revolves around it. Poe remains firm on his stance as an anti- transcendentalist. One of his most famous works is a poem called â€Å"The Raven†. The ballad is about a young man who is torn by the death of the woman he loved, and mourns for her dearly. The poem shows a direct and clear sense of negativity and sorrow in its 4 Patel tone (Magistrale 29). It seems as though Poe is openly mocking transcendentalism in his poem. The narrator of the poem suggests supernatural forces and a hostile natural world. According to transcendentalism, there is nothing more pure and innocent than nature. However, according to â€Å"The Raven†, nature is shown to be threatening, the complete opposite of transcendental belief. Another short story Poe had written is directly related to the topic of death. â€Å"The Masque of the Red Death† is about a deadly illness that takes over the country called Red Death. The Red Death had already killed half of the country, and was coming for the wealthy prince who had shut his doors to his kingdom, trying to save himself from the death, while his kingdom collapse to death’s knees. However, this did not stop the Red Death from entering the prince’s castle and killing them all as a faceless masked person. The moral of the story is that no one can escape death, not the rich or the poor. Mortality is a concept many people fail to understand. Though death is all over, it is hard to grasp that people only live for a certain amount of time while death creeps through continuous generations of the world. The theme in Poe’s â€Å"The Masque of the Red Death† is the concept of mortality and the fear of death. Death is everywhere in the story, and the use of allegory and personification brings the awful disease alive, sweeping through the nation and seizing all of its victims. The Red Death in the story was perceived to be about tuberculosis in reality. Since Poe had death all around him due to this disease, it only 5 Patel makes sense why it would have affected his writing, as well as on his stance on transcendentalism. In his eyes, he likely did not see living transcendentally as a belief since there was more death in his life than life itself. Poe also used the natural world and the supernatural in his poem â€Å"Annabel Lee†. The poem mentions nature everywhere, the sea being the biggest example of this, as well as the wind and clouds and starts. Though it would seem these parts of nature would be calming to him, Poe shows it to be a little scary and threatening in the ways he described these parts of nature. The narrator of the poem is slightly obsessed with how and why Annabel died, much like how Poe may have been distraught by his wife’s untimely death when she was succumbed by tuberculosis (â€Å"Poe, Edgar Allan (1809-1849), An Introduction to,† 220-221). Poe suggests in the poem if death is the end of a loved one, or if the love continues after death. A little brighter than his other stories and poems, Poe still clenches to the concept of death in this poem as well. There is no doubt that his work mostly revolved around fatality and mortality, the complete opposite of the transcendental belief (â€Å"Poe As Poet. † 2001). Poe shows his stance as an anti-transcendentalist through most of his work, giving a different viewpoint than the common belief in spirituality than the he lived. 6 Patel Poe writes another story that directly related to his viewpoint on transcendental belief. â€Å"Never Bet the Devil Your Head† was a clear attack on transcendentalism, the narrator calling it a â€Å"disease. † He uses Toby Dammit as an example of what this â€Å"disease† can do to an individual, seeing as Dammit succumbed to death. As a cruel joke, the narrator sends the bill of Dammit’s funeral to the transcendentalist, but they refuse to pay since they do not believe in the concept of evil (Allen Poe, â€Å"Never Bet the Devil Your Head†). This piece that Poe writes was a direct satirical story written about transcendentalism. In an essay that Poe wrote, called â€Å"The Philosophy of Composition†, Poe states, â€Å"It is the excess of the suggested meaning- it is the rendering this the upper instead of the under-current of the theme- which turns into prose (and that of the very flattest kind), the so-called poetry of the so-called transcendentalists† (â€Å"Poe’s Philosopy of Composition,† 1880). He mocks the transcendentalists in this piece of his work as well, directly stating them in his essay. Edgar Allan Poe mostly wrote his literary works about death and fatality. It seems as though death was all around him, from his adoptive father’s untimely death to the illness that succumbed his mother and wife. Nonetheless, this highly affected the tone and style of his short stories and poems that he has written. Almost all of his literary works have mentioned the supernatural world, mortality, and fear, all things that transcendental believers consider to be unexpressed over their belief in the natural world and God. Though he was not condescendingly against transcendentalism altogether, he 7 Patel was more so against the idea they believed it in the literary world, and that it should affect the way these authors and poets incorporated it in literature. There are many ways literature can we written, from mystery to the topic of love. Poe dealt with so much fatality in his life that it affected the way he created his work. Cooking: Water and Chicken Essay

Cooking has been my specialty since I was a child. This is one of my strongest talents. I can cook a variety of recipes from my local Ethiopian cuisines to the modern American recipes. Some of the foods I can boast off are â€Å"injera†, a local food of Ethiopians and spicy chicken sandwich but today I want to prepare chicken breast ready to be fried or baked. This is called simmering. Simmering is cooking the chicken with chicken broth or water. This makes the chicken tender and soft, ready to be fried. Firstly, rinse each chicken breast. If the breasts are frozen, allow them to fully defrost before boiling. The chicken breast can also be defrosted in the microwave, in the refrigerator, or by soaking it in a bowl of cold water. After defrosting the chicken is soaked in salt water it take the slimly taste out of it. Most Africans do this before cooking any poultry and dairy products After defrosting; fill a pot with water or chicken broth. The broth will be a better choice since it has a lot of flavoring. Place the chicken breasts in the pot, making sure that each piece is fully submerged under water or broth. Add more water or broth if necessary. Do not add more water or broth if not needed or this tends to make the chicken softer and even watery in extreme cases. If you want this to cook faster, cut the breasts into halves or in quarters. This is also a good way to ensure that the inside of the breast thoroughly cooks. Thirdly, place the pot on the stove. Bring water or broth with chicken to a boil, and then reduce to a simmer. The temperature must be right; this it must be too hot or lower. Cover the pot and allow the chicken to cook until the insides are no longer pink. Cook time will vary depending on the size and type of breast. Chicken breast can be skinless or boneless, either way; they should be cook for about thirty minutes. After thirty minutes, remove pot from the source of heat carefully to avoid getting burn. Drain liquid from the pot, and transfer breasts to a plate. Chicken should be white in color and be easily pulled apart with hands or a fork. At this point they are ready to be fried; baked or even eaten. Chicken that is boiled in only water can be very bland tasting. Adding vegetables and/or broth to the pot, and season your chicken with various cooking sauces and spices will give it some nice, warm taste. This is the most perfect time for to fry the chicken. Deep frying is my preferred choice but other methods include pan-frying or even baking. Either ways the chicken is well-prepared and ready to be eaten. The fryer should be a deep fryer so the chicken can be completely submerged in the fryer. Flour is used to coat the skin of the chicken; this gives the chicken its crispy coating and a fine layer of skin. Vegetable oil or olive oil is the best choice for frying. After the fryer is heated to the right temperature, the chicken is gently lowered into the pot to prevent the oil splashing around and causing burns. It takes of 30 minutes and above to get the chicken fully and wholly fried; during this time a watchful eye must be kept on it so it doesn’t burn. After this, they are ready to be served. They can be eaten with almost anything from stir-fries, fajitas to salads.

Functionalists use society as part of organic analogy. This means that society operates effectively due to all the parts of society working together. Evolution: Science and Religion In 1895 Charles Darwin published a book describing his theory of evolution, and his theory of the natural selection process. This theory caused much uproar in the religious community because Darwin’s theory went against the story of creation portrayed in the Holy Bible. His theory claimed that all life currently in place had evolved and adapted from a single organism in the beginning. Over time and by process of natural selection only the dominant species were left over while the other, less dominant species, went extinct. His theory, backed by scientific analysis, had dismissed the idea of a single deity creating all life on Earth. It is not like Darwin had a personal agenda against religion or anything, but he did create what would become the main evidence used by atheists to disprove the Bible. Now his theory is still theory, and is yet to be proven as a fact, but is still believed by much of the scientific society as a fact. The struggle between the religious and the athei stic will rage for many years, but where the battle will cause the most damage is in the American school system. The thesis of this paper is, teachers must be required to teach evolution; which is already in place in the American school system, but teachers cannot be allowed to teach evolution as a fact, or evidence disproving the existence of a god. On top of all of that, they must as well allow the expression of opposing viewpoints. In the American school system there is a constant separation of Church and State. This separation is undisputedly good for keeping the civil rights of students in order. By not allowing the pressures of church in schools, people of power cannot abuse their power for religious preferences. Richard W. Post Colonialism Theory To understand the post colonialism theory, I believe that we must first take a brief look at how we got here. In order to reach the post era, we first must walk through the challenges and lessons of those before us. How else would the history that we have to teach us today be there, how else would we have the literature to educate us? Colonialism was all about the newer, bigger, better lands and though these lands had natives already, they were Just another obstacle. They would befriend the natives and get them to teach them the ways of the land in order to live and survive off the land.Once they were self-sufficient, they would begin to try to conform the natives to their way of life as the proper way of life. They would teach them that they were living wrong and evil lives and would eventually turn against the natives when they did not conform to their way of life. Therefore switching roles from the colonized to the colonizers. In switching the roles of powe r and showing their true colors and purpose for being there, they showed their true nature for possession and power, for fear and hate.Throughout the texts that we have been studying, we see this over ND over again in the way that these characters move in and take over. As we look at the way Galoshes was possessive of his people and his land, we see the way he did as he pleased. He was known to be two thirds god and â€Å"a tyrant. † (Manson 15) As in those who are the colonizers, he was feared and not necessarily respected. He imposed his wishes and commands on his people and rather than living for them he forced them into submission, such as claiming his birthright, â€Å"the privilege of sleeping with their brides before the husbands were permitted. (Manson 15) as you see even now throughout the history books. It is a constant hunger for the power and desire of what is not ours that drives some. He lived this way for some time thinking that he is content until the farmer' s son brings him news of Unkind who is living in the forest with the animals as one. This is something new and undiscovered to him, but still not enough to get him totally worked up. Something untouched, something that he does not control or possess, so he sends the prostitute to see if he can disrupt it.It is in the continued thirst for power and possession that drives him to colonize in a way even Enkindles life in the ores. Galoshes is so bored, cold or immune to what he is doing that he forgot (Mason 17) that he has even done this and continues on with his life as he has done every day before that with no regard as to what impact he may have had on this man's life or history. The Tempest we see Prospers exiled on an island and living as the kingpin so to speak, but as we read on, it was not always that way.He was yet another example of the colonized becoming the colonizer. He came to the island as a humble exile, fleeing with his daughter Miranda after his brother Antonio had be aten him and moved his titles, lands and wealth to teach him a lesson. He befriended an island imp named Clinical who teaches them how to live on the island and in turn Miranda teaches him to speak. Prospers magically binds Clinical as a slave after he turns on him and holds his release over his head as a continual show of power.Where once he was liked well enough, he is now referred to as â€Å"a villain† by Miranda (Shakespeare act 1, scene 2), it is funny how the role are reversed when your usefulness has worn off and you no long hold the upper hand. The same ways Prospers holds Ariel, but he does not mind since he freed him from a much more evil master. Colonized and colonizers are switching roles and taking on roles of the others in this story. Everyone wants the power, yet no one knows how to share it because each feels that the other is less superior.As we look at the idea that both of these men Just wanted the possession of what they were after in the story, was that truly what they were after? Are we sure they were not after something else? An author by the name of Edward Said argued that â€Å"a literary text seldom conveys only one message† (Baldwin/Quinn 10). Could it be that they were after friendship, after love, after revenge, after hatred, after immortality (whether it was to be remembered in name or to live on as a god), or was it Just to die where they came from?So let's explore these options a little bit more. If we look to Galoshes, in changing the steps of Enkindles life with the prostitute, Unkind comes into his own and discovers who he is as a man and not Just animal by opening his eyes to his sexual nature and not Just his annalistic primal nature. Unkind comes to the city and challenges Galoshes to a man to man battle, which shows the release of anger and hate within them. The anger and hate was battled out for so long that upon the end of the battle it says they were exhausted.It states that when they stood, â€Å"He tu rned to Unkind who leaned against his shoulder and looked into his eyes and saw himself in the other, Just as Unkind saw himself in Galoshes† (Manson 24). If we look deeper into this quote from the book we see several things, we see love, we see friendship, and we could even see immortality of an everlasting soul mate. We see this love and friendship grow throughout the remainder of the story and most would say this is the main theme.They learn together, fight together, they even defy the gods together and therefore Galoshes is forced to pay the ultimate price for his part in that with the life of his friend and soul mate. Galoshes refuses to let go of his friend and the love the shared by bringing him back and puts himself through untold pain and toil to try to find a way to do so. He says, â€Å"l have been through grief! â€Å", â€Å"Even if there will be more of pain, and heat and cold, I will go on! † (Mason 57, 58). It is only when the serpent steals the plant and slithers away that he realizes he too must go back to whence he came.His search for immortality is lost. But is it? Is immortality everlasting life? Is it being known by name and story and being told over and over? Was his immortality the city that he had built and left behind as a legacy as we see him looking over in the beginning and the ending of his tale? I think that is up to our interpretation. If we take the same look at the Tempest as we did with the story of Galoshes, what would we see? We would see the love that Prospers had for his daughter Miranda and his desire to protect her from harm as he did on the island every day in is teaching and daily lessons.We see the love that he shows to Ariel although he is under his power he is gentle toward him, where with Clinical, he is rough and hateful. Prospers is very smart and calculated about how he gets his revenge. He does well not to kill or harm anyone to achieve it and wants to have those who have wronged him apologize. He even ensures the plan by involving his naive daughter and the love that she bears or will bear for Prince Ferdinand by having them married by the sacred beings. Once Prospers proved the treachery of Alonso, Antonio andSebastian that had been done to him those 12 years ago and the revenge had been played out, love won over. All he wanted was to have them to hear them apologize and to be restored. This was not a tale of immortality, but again, not of one singular theme either. I suppose the argument that I could make here is that no matter how you look at these two amazing pieces of literature, there are so many different stories all wrapped up into one. It is much like our history, not matter what angle you are looking at it from, there is always someone that has another view on it or how it really appended, or something missed.I think, like postcolonial literature, there is much to be left to the imagination in how we interpret it. I believe that what the authors had in mind when they wrote these stories was to let the stories wander and to evolve to fit what would speak to the reader and not to be one track minded. The point of having an imagination is to use it and set it free, to be able to read these stories and to re-read them and find a different angle every time is the best part about it. I don't believe that we were meant to stick to one specific theme, but to explore them all.Maybe you are not the type to explore them all at once, but next time you are thumbing through the pages, try looking at these stories from the prospective of more than one. It broadens the story and opens the plot to even more beauty and wonder of possibilities.
